Fellow Sharpshooters

This past week (May 12-15, 2023) was the Spring 2023 auction at Poulin Antiques and Auctions of Fairfield, Maine. The ‘star of the show’ was a nearly pristine NM1859 Berdan Contract Sharps from the personal collection of the late author and collector, Wiley Sword. This rifle was featured in Sword’s book, Hiram Berdan, His Famous Sharpshooters, and their Sharps Rifles; as well as Roy Marcot’s book, Hiram Berdan, Chief of Sharpshooters.

Wiley Sword himself noted that this Sharps was In nearly “unissued” condition and speculated that possibly an USSS officer pulled it for their own use. It is also possible this sample Sharps was kept at SRMCO to serve as a model for future USSS contracts. Hiram Berdan had envisioned a 3 regiment brigade of sharpshooters, so SRMCO may have anticipated an additional order for 1000 Sharps was forthcoming. Either way, it is a absolutely beautiful rifle.
