Here are some pics of the rifle before the tube sight installation. The man who sold it to me in Indianapolis said that his father made this gun for himself just before he died. He claimed that the barrel was from the 1840s. I never told him about any interest in history or the USSS. Furniture is silver, .45 cal.

The rifle above is now for sale or trade for Sharps with bayonet.

Earlier this year, I found a heavy barrel target rifle, complete with false muzzle. It wasn't in bad shape, but it definitely needed some work. In addition to the visible issues, the triggers were messed up - it wouldn't hold full cock unless the set trigger was pulled. It weighs in at about 19 pounds, and the bore is about .57". Very deeply cut rifling, and I'm not sure of the twist rate (yet).

These photos are from the original posting:

Jim at Fort Chambers (http://www.fortchambers.com/httpdocs/) did the work. I told him that time wasn't an issue. Most of the options were left to his expertise - for instance, I wanted the barrel browned, but I left the color and finish to him. The rougher finish doesn't radiate heat mirages as quickly as a smoother finish would. The only issue is that I didn't specify that I wanted period appropriate sights, and thus ended up with more modern ones. And price was very reasonable. :)

Post work photos aren't as extensive:

I'm hoping that the weather co-operates on Thanksgiving, as I can't wait to take it to the range.
