Post subject:  Uniform Coat Trim- Faded & Unfaded

Here is a photograph of the William Tilson coat owned by artist/historian Don Troiani. It shows a portion of the cuff facing that has come loose, allowing us a great look underneath at the trim material. You can see that the original color of the trim was a dark emerald or grass green, but has faded to a "pea-soup" green. If you look close you will see the plain weave of the trim (made from what was then called a "facing cloth" and also used for forage caps) as well as the oxidized logwood dyed thread, now brown, that was used to attach the trim to the cuff facing. The welted trim was formed while at the same time being sewn to the facing.

This is also an excellent illustration of the color and quality of the dark green coat cloth. There is definitely a blueish hue to the cloth and looks something like a spruce or evergreen. The finish is very fine and velvet-like; note the distinct lack of a visible weave. A cuff button and it's corresponding black silk cord buttonhole are also partially visible.
