Fellow Sharpshooters,

Forum contributor, Brian White, wrote an article that appeared in the Spring 2020 edition of Military Images Magazine. Brian traces the invention and development of the gray seamless overcoats worn by the Berdan Sharpshooters from the Fall of 1861 until Spring 1862.

Unfortunately, the “rebellious hue”, as described by Regimental historian, C.A. Stevens, “imperiled the wearer by friends and foe alike”, caused them to be turned in for storage at the Washington Arsenal. What happened to them afterwards has been lost to history.
