Post subject:  Thomas Tarbell image-Cowans Auctions

Fellow Sharpshooters,

Fellow member, Regimental Colours, brought to my attention the image of Thomas Tarbell being put up for auction on the Cowan website (http://www.cowanauctions.com/auctions/i ... mId=107522). The description is as follows:

Lot #22

A cdv-sized tintype of Lt. Thomas Tarbell with thin facial hair in frock coat with dark "rubber" buttons and brass 2/USSS/E kepi insignia. A large cloth 3rd Corps badge is also visible. A native of Mount Tabor, Vermont, Thomas J. Tarbell enlisted as Sergeant in Company E., 2nd USSS in October 1861 and was captured at 2nd Bull Run, paroled and returned to the regiment in November 1862. Tarbel was promoted to 1st Sergeant in December 1863 and again to 2nd Lieutenant on March 13, 1864 before being wounded in the Wilderness on May 6, shot in the left thigh. Tarbell was sent to Douglas General Hospital in Washington and later furloughed back home to Danby, Vermont where he died on October 9, 1864 from the effects of typhoid fever and infection.

Condition: Some wear to plate where it once was matted, plus slight wear along edges.

I would recommend using the enlarging tool to view the rich details of Tarbell's cap and uniform coat. His cap is 'pimped out' with 1 inch brass U S S S along the rear crown, in addition to his 3rd Corps badge (that would have been blue-designating the 3rd division). The regulation uniform coat is an enlisted mans with original issue Goodyear buttons (flat-dome type with brass shank-eyelit showing in middle). The backdrop looks similar to Painted Tent backdrop (based on Brian White's extensive research) used in the April and June 1863 series; but Tarbell coat shows no evidence of stripes--so perhaps it was taken earlier in his enlistment.

Good eyes, Colours!
