At is an upcoming auction highlighting the Civil War collection of John Henry Kurtz. Among the dozen pages containing original mint-condition uniforms is an identified cased tintype of Sergeant Charles Nye of Co. E 1st U.S.S.S.. Check out the link below. ... t_No=57665

The description states that Nye is depicted in uniform shortly before Gettysburg but when we look closer at the image and compare his clothing to contemporary accounts, it's more likely that he was photographed sometime earlier in 1863. For instance, if you look at the image it appears that his corps badge was tinted blue at some time; the sharpshooters were first issued 3rd Div. III Corps badges in March but joined the 1st Div. in June right before the Gettysburg campaign commenced. Also, many sharpshooter writers and diarists state that the regiments were in newly issued, full green uniforms early in 1863 in order for the April review by President Lincoln. The fact that he is not wearing rank insignia, but was promoted to sergeant in January 1863, supports my theory that the image was in fact taken within the first quarter of 1863.

Interestingly, the description also states that Nye is wearing a "rare, unpiped dark green sharpshooters' coat". If you look closely you will see that the piped French cuff present on all government issued enlisted uniform coats is visible (if somewhat blurred) on the sleeve of the hand underneath his forage cap. And don't forget the sharp, clearly visible rubber buttons!

Make sure that you click on "Turn Off Pan & Zoom" right above the image so you can simply click on the images and get an enormous high resolution view.
