Fellow Sharpshooters,

For sale on the Horse Soldier website is a 1884 sketch of the Rogers House and barn at Gettysburg. This was the position of the Wisconsin Sharpshooters of Co. G-1st USSS during the second day's fighting. The sketch was made by a former member of the 9th Mass Artillery, Richard Holland. Holland was an Irish immigrant who was a painter before and after the war. Throughout his service, Holland kept a sketch pad to record incidents. Unfortunately, unlike Richard Taylor or Winslow Homer, his sketches have not been published (at least to my knowledge). However, he rendered frescos that still exist, the HS provides a nice biographical sketch of Holland's life. Holland sketched the farm during his 1884 visit to dedicate the 9th MASS monument at the Trostle Farm.

The sketch POV is looking south along the Emmitsburg Road (recorded by Holland as "Emmetsburg"), with the buildings on the right side. The first is a large barn with ramp, and behind it is the edge of the house. Above the buildings, Holland wrote in "SHARP SHOOTERS" indicating the hidden from view Co. G. monument.

Like the Bliss Property--that figured large in the furious skirmishing on July 2-3rd (until its burning by Union infantry, supported by Co. L 1st MN/formerly Co. L 1st USSS); this is likely the only image of the Rogers house and barn. I'm not certain when the buildings were lost-but they were certainly still standing at the time of the 9th MASS battery dedication.

Here is the link to this now missing, but now not forgotten, bit of Gettysburg landscape.
