Fellow Sharpshooters. For those who have a fascination for following troop movements of the Battle of Botelers/Blackford Ford, the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation site provides the following link. http://www.battleofshepherdstown.org/Maps.html I recently purchased and read McGrath's book about the battle and found it a very good read. While it did mention some of the USSS actions on the first day, the second day of the battle was primarily devoted to the 118th PA disaster-a number of accounts coming from Captain Francis Adam Donaldson, author of Inside the Army of the Potomac (formerly of the 71st NY and strident USSS critic). All in all, a nice book that cites numerous primary sources (original participants accounts) from soldiers of both sides. Also accounts by the civilians in Shepherdstown; who had to contend with temporarily housing hundreds of wounded following the Antietam/Sharpsburg battle, shelling by Federal artillery posted across the river (ironically, on the family farm of Col. Henry Kyd Douglas-staff officer for Gen. TJ Jackson), and then another 4-500 wounded from the Botler's Ford fighting. The book is has over 80 photographs of participants so you can 'put a face with the name'-another plus for folks like me who have a knack to visualize events. One shortcoming was that the books maps were not to scale. The link above remedies this situation very nicely, and discribes and shows the troop movements over both days. One you get oriented, then go to Mapquest or Goggle Earth and get a modern perspective of the battlefield. I got to get East or die trying. Bill Skillman Randolf Mess-USSS |
