Fellow Sharpshooters
Sharpshooters of the American Civil War 1861 to 1865This is a reprint (2003) by Raintree (USA) and published through Osprey Publishing Ltd. (UK). Like all Osprey productions, they provide a historical overview of famous Infantry, cavalry and artillery regiments that served during the Civil War. In addition, each booklet contains period CDV’s, photographs, newspaper illustrations and feature a modern artist’s paintings of soldiers uniforms, accouterments and weapons.
Sharpshooters in the Civil War (Warrior 60) is authored by Philip Katcher and illustrated by Steven Walsh. It is available to be read online or downloaded as a PDF document.
Despite its slim size, Mr. Katcher provides an excellent overview of the major sharpshooter organizations, both North and South, that were raised and fought during the War. Steven Walsh provides fairly accurate illustrations of sharpshooters, their uniforms, equipment and weapons.
For those readers interested in an introduction to Berdan’s Sharpshooters (and less emphasis on other US/CSA battalions) role during the Civil War, Katcher’s book does a fine job.
