After recently learning the whereabouts of the grave and ephemera/material collection of Capt. A.B. Stuart, Co. B 2nd USSS, I began looking into other Michigan sharpshooters who might be buried in southwest Michigan. To my surprise I learned that not only is Capt. Stuart buried in Otsego, just a few miles north of where I live in Kalamazoo, but 2nd Lt. Jonathan A. Sprague of Co. I 1st USSS is buried a couple of blocks down the road from my house.

Sprague was among Co. I's first officers and enlisted on Dec. 10th, 1861, but was mustered in on March 4th, 1862. He was wounded and captured on June 27th, 1862 at Gaines' Mill and was subsequently imprisoned at Richmond. Due to overcrowding of Libby Prison, Lt. Sprague was kept under guard with others inside the cattle cars that transported them into the city. He contracted typhoid fever and was later exchanged on Aug. 27th, 1862, for Lt. Col. James J. Odell of the 26th Tennessee Infantry. Sprague was cared for in a Washington hospital before being discharged and sent home on Oct. 18th, 1862. Further details about Sprague's life before and after the war can be read at this link: http://books.google.com/books?id=dmczAQAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA103&lpg=RA1-PA103&dq=jonathan+a.+sprague+sharpshooters&source=bl&ots=gaY93oOtVh&sig=T2Ut6aZRqdMZk5fCTNDsTIzu3IY&hl=en&sa=X&ei=aZuCUf-WJcekqAHrioDYCg&ved=0CDgQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=jonathan%20a.%20sprague%20sharpshooters&f=false

The Sprague family plot at the Mountain Home Cemetery contain the graves of Reverend J.A. Sprague, his wife Adelaide, son Herbert, and daughter Della.
