Post subject:  Pvt. Herbert L. Burdick

Apart from within the confines of Gettysburg National Cemetery I have not encountered many graves of sharpshooters who actually lost their lives during the course of the Civil War.

Yet, here in a small cemetery along Route 8 in Upstate New York which is more well know for a patently false urban legend, we find one such grave. Where the waters of the Unadilla River flow south towards the Susquehanna rests Private Herbert L. Burdick of Co. B, 1st U.S.S.S.

Sadly enough I don't know the exact circumstances of his death, be it either from combat or from illness. All I really know is that he is definitely one of the youngest sharpshooters at the time of his death who I've come across...he was only 18!

One of the few things I was able to find out was that he encountered a friend of his near Sharpsburg. This letter says that Herbert "expected to be mustered in" with a few days. Within a few days...he was dead..
