Cyrus J. Hardaway was born in Chenango County, New York in 1838. He served for two years in the sharpshooters before taking a command position in the 114th N.Y.S.V.I.

His headstone is a large, prominent, and imposing chuck of granite in the New Berlin cemetery.

One must take notice of the fact that he or his loved ones had the stone chiseled with the names of the principal battles in which he participated. This is not the first time I've seen this on a veteran's stone, though this is the first sharpshooter who I've seen to have done so.

Though I took these photos back in September I recall that I had a brief conversation with the deacon of the church. He remembers Co. C visiting a few years back fondly and wondered if we would be interested in returning. I informed him that "anything is possible", but that with the 150th coming up things would be tight.

Here is a link to Hardaway's letters online. Neat stuff, including mention of clothes and equipment after the battle of Malvern Hill.
