Fellow Sharpshooters
The Library of Congress website provides a panoramic sketch by Alfred Waud of the Union artillery bombarding Confederate positions at Franklin’s Crossing the day of the Reconnaissance. The sketch shows the orderly positions of the batteries, the cassions, and lastly the infantry regiments at the base of the bluff. The artillery batteries appear close to the river banks, suggesting that resistance from the Confederate pickets is minimal. A second Waud sketch captures the effects of the cannonade on the soldiers of the 2nd Florida infantry, posted in the rifle pits and earthworks across the River. I suspect Waud obtained the details of his sketch from interviews with Confederate prisoners.
