Fellow Sharpshooters

I discovered a remarkable website hosted by Jim Woodrick of Ridgeland, MS. On the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam he featured an article of 2nd USSS adjutant, Lewis Parmalee. For those of us who are students of the 2nd USSS actions that grim and bloody morning, Woodrick presents a new account of Parmalee's actions leading up to his death. Among his personal effects that survived and have been passed down, Woodrick purchased Parmalee's personal Handbook for Active Service that was published for the 7th NY Militia (Parmalee was a member of the elite 7th NYM before enlisting in the USSS). Remarkably, Woodrick purchased the book from a shop in Biloxi, MS shortly before Hurricane Katrina completely ravaged the area.

Enjoy the article. I certainly did. Reading the article sparked my old blood to go back and walk once again through Miller's cornfield and the adjacent field next to the Hagerstown Pike where Gibbon's battery was posted.
