Post subject:  Prototype Sharps?

Fellow Sharpshooters,

Dan Wambaugh discovered a fascinating NM 1859 infantry pattern Sharps rifle for sale on Gun Broker; item # http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =204725924

What immediately stood out is that this rifle has a Lawrence Pellet primer system on the lockplate. As you may have read in my articles about the Sharps rifles; other than the originals the only repop to have a LPP was those imported by Garrett Arms, during the mid-1970's.

Some other fascinating features are: There is no maker's stamps on either the barrel or lockplate. On the reverse side, forward of the reciever swell, is 'PEDEROSOLI' above a 'W' with a closing line above it. Inside the symbol is lettering that looks like 'DAN' or 'OAN'. The serial # is located on the tang at the wrist, '021614'; but some of the numbers are slightly offset (higher than) from the rest of the sequence. Just to the rear of the hauss is a single stamp: '.54 caliber' The patchbox is opened with numbers inked in: '614' below either a '3' on its back or a w. The wood and bluing looks very good.

Dan and I speculated that this rifle could be one of the first NM1859 'transition' Sharps made by Pederosoli; that incorporated Garrett parts? It may have been a pattern piece or early import for dealers to review. Or is it a gun made from cast off parts by a NSSA or other gunsmith? Either way, a very interesting and unique piece.

The last bid was $595. If anybody is looking for a unique Christmas gift this year, pop this link in the wife's email.
