Fellow Sharpshooters;

On the Civil Wart Talk Forum this morning is a letter discovered by the ancestor of Private Ira Lunt (Co. D 2nd USSS) requesting permission from brigade commander, Gen. Regis deTrobraind, to carry his personal target rifle on service in lieu of the Sharps. Lunt's request was officially forwarded by Capt. Crockett to brigade HQ, and was approved. Also featured on the thread are some excellent close up photos of Lunt's target rifle, telescope, wooden carrying case and loading equipment.

Here is the link to the article: https://www.civilwartalk.com/threads/am ... nd.145024/

For those of you wanting to create your own 'special service' rifle and set up for living history--this is the standard to shoot for.

This letter also answers an earlier question posed on this forum about who was authorized to carry target rifles. In this case, a private was allowed to use their personal target rifle once it had been vetted at company and brigade command. The regimental 'heavies' (10-12 per regt.) appear to have been issued to Orderly Sgts. or senior NCO's based on current research. In terms of chronology-this would have been after the Michigan, Vermont and NH companies gave up their personal weapons circa 1862 for the Sharps.

I am not super savvy with these forums and I am having difficulty understanding how to upload images. Sorry for the dumb question but how do I upload a jpeg to a post?
