Fellow Sharpshooters,

Last evening, I recieved my latest edition of the Feb/March Civil War News and discovered in the News and Reviews section a recently published book about the Shepherdstown fight. Since the book is not specifically about the USSS, I thought it best to post it here (Dave, if you disagree, please feel free to move it).

Shepherdstown: Last Clash of the Antietam Campaign, September 19-20, 1862
Author: Thomas A. McGrath. 247 pages, $30 plus shipping
Schroder Publications
131 Tanglewood Dr.
Lynchburg, VA 24507

Ken Williams (reviewer) wrote: "Thomas McGrath, an instructor at North Country College in New York has taken on the challenge to tell the full story of this action which in casualties turns out to be the largest fight in what is now West Virginia.

Sherpherdstown is a detailed accounting of the rear guard action following the Confederate withdrawal across the Potomac River on the 19th and 20th of the September.

McGrath uses extensive compliation of primary sources to tell his story of the fighting along the river bluffs. He lets many of the soliders who did the actual fighting relate the confusing and bloody details of those two days.

The book is filled with photographs of many of the participants as well as period and modern photos of the battlefield. Appendices include an order of battle, casualty lists, accounts of the artillery bombardment and weather conditions.

There are a number of maps, however they are hand drawn and not to scale. It is the only drawback to an otherwise superb battle account.

For anyone interested in the Antietam campaign, this volume is as vital as a good collection as Sear's Landscape Turned Red or Harsh's trilogy on Confederate operations.

Sounds like my kind of book. In light of the proposed housing development, the photos contained in this book may be the last views of the original battlefield.
