Not sure how many of you out there have seen this but I located it tonight while searching around online again. This was written by Doty when he was quite old so his accounts are very short and choppy. Keep yours eyes peeled for the story about how they turned a company officer upside down and how another Company H man used to spit in his pancakes to keep his friends from stealing them!

Brian,
Please change the heading of this entry to Co. H 1st USSS instead of Co. E. My heart skipped a beat thinking that there was a member of the NH Co. E that I did not know about. I look forward to re-reading this account.
Thanks.

While reading this, I came upon the text "Our next move was to Gordonsville VA and while on the march one of the Rebel Officers happened to see that I was A Sharpshooter. He drew his Revolver, and would have shot me if the Guard had not stopped him. The Guard said that I was under his Protection, and he would protect me, and he did." This somewhat confirms stories that I've heard but I would like to get my question out there. Where the Berdan Sharpshooters treaty unfairly/murdered after taken prisoner? It wouldn't be hard to tell who they were by what colour they were wearing unlike the Confederate Sharpshooters unless they wore their battalion badges/patches.

Bonnie,
The heading says "Co. H" and I'm sure that's how I typed it, unless a moderator changed it after it was posted.

Joseph,
The obviously angry rebel officer may have been an exception. I think that the opinion of the Sharpshooters' "trade" varied as much did as the personalities of those who expressed them. Another account in which Sharpshooters became prisoners was recorded by Charles Fairbanks of the 2nd U.S.S.S.. He was taken at Gettysburg while scouting ahead of his regiment on July 2nd. In his memoir he doesn't record any particular incidents of ill-will towards he and his fellow sharpshooters, but did note that the whole group of prisoners was placed so near the Confederate lines on July 3rd that they came close to being shelled by their own artillery. There are many other accounts, from both Federals and Confederates, that show a pretty mixed amount of feelings towards what the Sharpshooters were employed to do.

Brian,

I made the change, since I am not sure if you can change a subject line once it is submitted.
